The New Chevrolet Impala is a Sleeper....In a Great Way

The Chevrolet Impala has been on the market in this body style for the past six years. The car has been loved by rental car agencies and people looking for an effective family car capable of good gas mileage and plenty of room. The car features small exterior changes such as the mesh grille and the painted molding on the trunk. Both of these features are reminiscent of the late SS Impala killed 2 model years ago.

On the inside nothing much has changed. The same interior that was used the last few years. Oddly enough the impala comes standard with the 5 passenger floor mounted shifter. If one wants to upgrade to a 6 passenger sedan with column mounted shifter it is an extra $200.00. Quite backward in my opinion being that it is probably cheaper to mount the shifter on the column then build a center console. Now for the best part the new 3.6 liter DOHC, VVT, direct injected engine V6. This engine makes 300 horsepower and 262 lbs of torque. The past V6's were a 3.5 V6 which made 211hp and the 3.9 which made 230 hp (which I believe is in the current Impala police interceptor cars). This new power plant also makes 1 less hp and 71 fewer pounds of torque then the dead V8 SS Impala. This engine is in GM vehicles across the lineup such as in the Traverse, CTS, Malibu and Camaro. The car also features a new transmission from a dated 4 speed to a new 6 speed.

Is this GM making cars cheaper only having to use one V6....probably. What a sleeper though....I think I'll take mine in a base model with the rental car wheels and shift on the column and surprise a few tuner guys from light to light.

Keeping it a Ford

One of my favorite cars are street rods. I love the 30's, 40's and 50's cars. These cars are just the definition of cool, they have character that the newer tuner cars lack.

One my favorites is the 32 Ford. The car pictured below is a 32 5 window coupe, i came across it at a local car show. The car caught my eye the second i came up to it I saw all the bolts on the engine, I saw the distributor in the front the car had Ford Flathead V8!

I told the owner of the car you did a great job building the car, i like the fact you didn't put a Chevy V8 in it. He was quick to respond "it is not that hard to put a Ford in it." and he appreciated the comment. Don't get me wrong the 32 in American Graffiti had a Chevrolet engine in it and that is by far one of my favorite movie cars. I just have more respect if it is built with a engine of the same manufacture.

On another note i like the little touches of this street rod. Such as keeping the fenders on it, the moon hubcaps with painted wheel, white wall tires and chrome beauty rings. The owner left the bumpers on it, this car is done up in a tasteful way. If he ever needed to sell the car or sell it to move on to the next project he should have no worries getting offers.

Watches and Cars???

This post is one I have been thinking of for a little while. I have always loved cars, but my new found love is watches. Some people buy a Timex and it does the job, it tells them the time but i feel it doesn't have the personality I look for in a timepiece. What do watches possibly have to do with cars besides tell you your running late for a date or an appointment?

Rolex Daytona
Rolex has sponsored the 24 Hours of Daytona. This watch Rolex calls "the drivers watch" it features a tachymeter and a chronograph. The tachymeter which is engraved into the bezel, this is for measuring speed over a pre-determined distance. The chronograph is the three subdials in the center of the timepiece this measures time, such as if one is to measure lap times.

Breitling for Bentley

If you prefer a bigger timepiece this is the watch for you. Breitling has sponsored Bentley in racing. If you look in a new Bentley Continental GT the analog clock in the center of the dash will say Breitling. If you look at the case back of one of these watches it will have the Bentley race car or a wheel of a car.

Jaeger-LeCoultre

This watch company has partnered with my favorite dream car Aston Martin. Together they have made many time pieces together but this one is by far the one that is most interesting. This watch pays tribute to the super car the DBS, the car that was featured in James Bond Casino Royale.

The best part of the watch isn't the sporty style or the fact is says "DBS" on the face. This watch OPERATES THE CAR! In the watch is a remote transponder that will allow the owner of the car to unlock, lock, turn the lights on and start the car. Think Mustang if you love your car you got to have the mustang hat or T-shirt, if you have a DBS you NEED the watch.

Sadly these watches are all Swiss made and appeal to a very high end audience. The Daytona and the Breitling will run you from $5000 to as much as $15,000. The Jaeger will cost as much as $20,000-$30,000. These are amazing watches sadly myself and others who appreciate these but no way can afford them.

Let me show you some out of my collection that can be picked up for under $100.00. My favorite brand is Invicta timepieces. They offer great quality, style and most of all they are affordable.

Invicta Air Legend

This watch is a tad smaller in case size then the Breitling. It has the same Knurled bezel, very similar bracelet, face, and hour markers. This has a Ronda quartz (battery powered) chronograph movement. It is a great piece when one wants a bigger watch but not a clock on the wrist.

Invicta Speedway

This watch steals highly from the Rolex Daytona. Having the similar engraved bezel, three subdials, bracelet and case. This watch is very interchangeable dress it up in a suit or dress it down with blue jeans.

The blue on the left is stunning, on the right I have a rose gold. Rose gold is the mixing of copper and gold to achieve the copper/pinkish look on the plating on the timepiece. Both watches feature a precise Seiko Japanese chronograph movement.

Unlike the counterfeit watches these have warranties. There is no shame wearing one of these opposed to a fake Rolex. When someone confuses it for a Rolex you can say "no it is not a Rolex it is an Invicta"

Quote of the Week

"Uh, no, but that's because your trying to talk into your headphones again." - Me to Rebel after he asked if I could hear him.

This was the first line of the first episode of our radio show. This is how we came out of dead air.

Quick Hits

Hey gang, came across this article in Top Gear magizine about one f my favorite cars of all time the SSC Ultimate Aero. The Ultimate Aero was made in the USA to be the fastest car ever built, and it was (its also the car on the background of this site). Amazingly enough, the record run was done by a 71 year old man because a professional test driver was too scared of the Aero's ability to have wheelspin at 215+mph. Even more amazing, the old bastard did it without a helmet, firesuit, or even a seatbelt. God bless America. Here's an awesome quote though......

"Before you ask, it's nothing like a Veyron. It's more visceral and more basic and, yes, more brutally fast. By some way. Shelby himself took a car to the Middle East where some local potentates arrived with two Veyrons and commanded the road be closed. It duly was, they duly did a TG-style drag race, and the SSC duly won. Two men ordered SSCs on the spot. The next day they paid. Using cash, pulled out of a Louis Vuitton holdall."

How awesome is that?  Here's the link to the whole article, which is a little outdated (the car is an '06, but tested now....) http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/ssc-new-fastest-car-world?

In other news, I've come across a company making street legal NASCARs. Here's their promo video:

And the scary part is, they have quite alot of kit in them, far more than a real NASCAR. In addition to lights, windows and doors, they have leather seats, cupholders, AC, a backseat with harnesses, and several awesome stereo options. Theres a 450bhp engine, but you really want the 572ci 650bhp version, which is available fuel injected or carbed. 5 or 6 speed manuals drive the wheels, and 6 piston brebo road racing brakes can be ordered. These beasts cost between $120,000 and $160,000, which isn't that bad actually. Give me a primer black one with no fake sponsers and the big motor. Please?

Busy day today, so that's it for today. Stay here for more Tuned Action.

LF-A: Most Useless "Supercar" Ever?

What you see above you is the new lap record holder for a lap of the Nurburgring by a production car. It is the 2010 Dodge Viper ACR, and it lapped the 13-mile "Green Hell" in just 7:12.1! It defeated the Lexus LF-A which ran a time of 7:14.6. This proves once again the the LF-A is the most overrated and most useless supercar ever. The LF-A that briefly held the recor was not even a stock one, but rather was a "Nurburgring Edition" a car that Lexus built solely "to be the fastest road legal car ever around the Nurburgring". Then the SRT division of Dodge takes a two year old, pushrod powered relic and blows it away, after less than a month (the LF-A set the record on August 31).

The LF-A has always been one of my least favorite cars. Not because of its nearly decade long development (good cars take time) not because only 500 were ever built and all were sold to preselected Lexus owners (Ferrari did the same with the Enzo), and not because it uses the outdated V10 their F1 team scrapped (V10s are awesome, and besides Toyota had to salvage something from the nearly 10 billion, yes billion, it suck into F1 without ever winning a race.)

No what bothered me about the LF-A was that it cost $375,000. OK, its a supercar, a super price is expected. Well it only has a top speed of 202mph, which an SRT-10 can do as well, and the Viper only cost $98,000. Huh? How does that work? Its also heavy and front engined, so it doesn't handle that well. And it has more gizmos on it than you can imagine, gizmos that can't be turned off. The 0-60 and 1/4 mile times for the LF-A can only be set with the traction and launch control on. Boo! But wait, the LF-A Nurburgring Edition, (which will cost nearly half a million BTW) will be worth something. It will set the record around the 'ring. That's pretty cool. Oh wait a two year old Dodge that costs 1/5th as much just smoked it. Damn.

But again it comes down to the price, would you pay $375,000 for a Toyota? Of course not. Hell honda couldn't sell the NSX and that was only $100,000 and change. Chrysler had this problem a few years ago if you remember. Chrysler built the 850bhp ME-412 in 2004 and it would have been faster than a Bugatti Veryon. Problem was this gorgous speed machine (I saw the prototype in person) would have cost $750,000 and focus groups everywhere laughed at paying that much for a Chrysler. It killed the project. At least Chrysler is a luxury carmaker. What's Toyota's excuse?

Anyway, it ain't all roses for the Viper. According to several sources the record is being protested by Toyota because the ACR variant of the Viper isn't street-leagl in Germany, so techincally, it isn't a road car. My problem with that is how the hell can a car be legal in California, where motorheads are still drawn and quartered, but not legal in Germany, which has no speed limits? (The front splitter is the reason, as the krauts claim it will sever legs of people who get run over. Right.......)

Anyway, in case you were wondering what the overall record for the 'ring is, its 6:47 secs by the Pagani Zonda R. Watch the video below, and turn it up!

Quote of the Week

"Well you could run it this way, but if I were you, I'd wait til I hook up that line. I mean it'll run without it, you just won't have brakes. But it'll run if you want it to..................it just won't stop." - The Old Man, just before I took Roxy out for a test drive, after changing her carb.

HUGE News!

Greetings all, big news today, Tuned has a radio show! Rebl's been given a radio show at school, and has been gracious eough to let me crash/hijack/co-host it! We'll be broadcasting every Monday at 1pm on Misrcordia radio. There's a live feed available and once I get the lik from Reb, we'll post it up. We're also working on recording these shows and posting them as podcasts, so we'll see how that goes. Our first episode is this coming Monday, how awesome is that? Stay right here for future radio related updates.

Off - Topic, here is the picture of the new Porsche seven speed manual I promised to find. How easy will it be to go fifth to seventh? I'm guessing very, judging by the pic........

The (Insane) Men Behind the Horsepower

Greetings Tuned lovers, for this post I decided to take a more serious, factual approach. Why? Lord knows, but here we go. I came to the realization that while I often post about my racing exploits, I have never posted any pictures, or much info, about my Nova. Well I decided to change that. Hollywood and I filmed an episode documenting the Nova and its 80% edited and soon should be up. But today I want to talk about my team. Because behind every awesome driver, is an awesome team. So here they are.

Let's go left to right shall we? First, we have Rags our number 2 mechanic. Rags is old school. He's been doing this since the 1960s. He tuned Mr. S. back in the day and is a fan of doing things the really old school way. Need proof? He likes to use Orange Soda as traction compound. "It's sticky isn't it?" Yup, mind officially blown. He's also our leading safety advocate, and like everyone else is horrified by my "never lift ever" driving style. Most of Rag's warnings end with "or else will be cutting you out of that damn thing!"

Next is Mr. S. himself. The true man behind the horsepower. The without whom none of this would be possible. He owns Sincavage Lumber and half our team. He's our sponsor and team boss. He's the Roger Penske to my Mark Donahue. He drove a chevelle in the late '60s and was a pretty decent driver. He's more focused on the manager role now, refusing any seat time (so far) and instead trying to tame my insanity with reason and team orders. He is a ri\dculous amount of fun, especially when he and Rags go off about touring back in the day. His Steve McQueen type persona is also quite neat. We have one of the few teams where the owner has as much (if not more) charisma than the driver.

Speaking of which, next in line is me, acting like the disinterested driver and pulling off the look like a boss.

After me is the Old Man, co-owner and crew chief. The Old Man has over 35 years experience spinning wrenches, and has been crew chief on several race teams, including a Pro Mod team during the early period of the class. He often found adjusting suspension setting and tire pressures and screaming at me for some small offense behind the whell that only he sees. He's also our number two driver and will get behind the wheel to dial in the car's baseline so I can hop in and run banzai laps, which I prefer.

Last, but not least, we have Neil. Neil is another mechanic, and my driving coach/therapist. He has the unenviable job of talking me down from the bell tower, day in and day out. Neil will often be found sticking his head in the cockpit, trying to keep me from killing someone. Poor bastard. He is a superb driver in his own right pedaling a '76 Nova with a dyno proven 768bhp that runs 10.90s.

Now every driver claims they have the best crew in the world, but I actually do. Know why? Because they put up with me. I'm a diva, a prima donna, whatever you want to call me. I'm never happy with the car, ever. I yell, I scream, I bitch, and they put up with it and go to work, giving me the fastest mount possible. Kinda sweet of them, they could set the car up to kill me, but they resist that temptation. They are better men than me.

Speaking of my mount, the video will be up soon, promise. Stayed Tuned!
